Herts Military Records Project

Discover the records of the Territorial Forces in Hertfordshire, including records of the Hertfordshire Militia, Infantry, Yeomanry Regiments, Royal Artillery, Home Guard and Army Cadets.

The records relate to the Territorial Forces while serving at home and overseas, during times of peace and war, from 1663 – 1994. They include 1000s of photographs, individual service records, diaries, recollections and official records.

Newly identified albums contain posed studio portrait photographs of officers and men of the Hertfordshire Militia and 4th Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment (Hertfordshire Militia) from c 1860s – 1915.

Other gems include handmade Christmas cards made by men of 135th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery while Prisoners of War in Changi Prisoner of War Camp, Singapore, Dec 1942, and the records of Voluntary Aid Detachments, including for the Royston VAD Hospital, where Dame Maud Bevan was Commandant, mainly during the First World War.
