New collections – just in and awaiting cataloguing
During November we were delighted to receive Royston Crow scrapbooks together with records of Cottered charities and women’s institute (Acc 6007). Early 19th century poor rate and highways accounts (DAcc 1461) have been added to the Cottered parish records.
From St John the Evangelist, High Cross, we have banns and baptisms, and also the burials back to 1847 (DAcc 1462). We took in Methodist records from the Bishops Stortford Circuit (Acc 6010).
Acc 6016 contains printed maps collected by the historian W B Gerish and dating back to 1598. From Beckwiths, the well-known Hertford antiques shop, we received further business records and photographs (Acc 6018). In Acc 6013 are the personal papers of coach driver Dennis Daniels who was praised for thwarting a 1976 robbery in Watford.
And who would have missed A R Hill’s 1859 ‘Extraordinary Sensation’ (posters in Acc 6020) showing in Hitchin and Royston ‘comical experiments in electro-biology and mesmerism’ and ‘funny and farcical speeches’ including ‘electrical shocks without a battery’, ‘scenes of merry love’ and ‘the stinging bees’.
These and previous new collections do not yet appear in the online catalogue – however you are welcome to contact us for more information.
